KMK Consulting Discusses Hawai’i’s Efforts to Diversify Its Economy
Cincinnati, January 6, 2003- KMK Consulting President and CEO Jim McGraw was recently interviewed for his insight in a recent Honolulu Advertiser article discussing Hawai’i’s efforts to stimulate its economy. The state has historically relied heavily upon its tourism business but a slow global economy and lingering effects of September 11th have prompted newly-elected Governor Linda Lingle to stress a need for diversifying the state’s economy. The state is pursuing ways in which to diversify its tourism base while expanding its technology and healthcare sectors and resurrecting the agriculture sector. Among the incentives is the new Act 221, a tax credit for technology investors intended to boost Hawai’i’s high-tech sector. Enterprise Honolulu, Inc. has been working with the Hawai'i Tourism Authority as well as other economic development agencies to develop marketing materials to attract more than tourists. There are also ongoing discussions between Enterprise Honolulu, the Governor's office and the Legislature to develop additional tax incentives for businesses in low-income areas and for locally based enterprises. Jim McGraw said “Act 221 is a step in the right direction for the state but ultimately the state's marketing efforts will need to reflect that the state is more than just a tourist destination. That's where the state's sizable tourism business is an advantage.” "In doing that, you're trying to sell to the business person who's there on vacation and let him or her know that Hawai'i has a lot to offer in terms of business," McGraw said. "You don't have that ability where tourism is not a big business of its own. That gives you more bang for the buck." To read the entire article, click here.
