Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce Reinvention Complete

Cincinnati, August 3, 2001- KMK Consulting Company (KMKC) is proud to announce that its involvement in the reinvention of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce has resulted in the creation of the new Scottsdale Area Chamber: The Business Alliance. As described in a May 30 article, KMKC’s role was to provide strategic advice with respect to the Chamber’s reinvention, focusing on its revenue model and related issues that would most effectively complement a new organizational structure, new mission, new programs and new value proposition. The new entity was unveiled on June 20, 2001 with a vision of "building a vibrant and prosperous community through business leadership."

Phil Carlson, President and CEO of the Scottsdale Chamber, provided the rationale behind making the change by saying, "Relentless competition, globalization, alliance building, technology, increased knowledge, constant change - all of these factors affect business to their very core....It was crucial for the Chamber to fully grasp the fundamental changes reflected by the New Economy, and to accordingly help businesses shift, refocus and rethink their business strategies to succeed. To be effective in that, we had to think deeply and creatively about what adjustments were necessary within our organization, as well."

The Business Alliance now has four strategic goals: shaping public policy that governs their business environment; engaging in business development that includes attraction, retention, expansion and workforce and recognizes the critical role of development; strategically facilitating the building of community vision; and providing member services that add value both directly and indirectly.

Jim McGraw, Managing Director of KMK Consulting said, "The new Scottsdale Area Chamber has an opportunity to build upon the successes of the old Chamber and have a tremendously positive impact on the business climate of Scottsdale, which was already very good. I think the reinvention process has helped many realize the awesome potential of their community and energized them to achieve their goals. I am grateful that our involvement could assist this wonderful organization, its leaders, its staff and the Scottsdale community."

About the Scottsdale Chamber

The Scottsdale Chamber was chartered on March 6, 1947 and its main charge was to serve as the town government: raising money for the Community Chest; initiating and funding projects such as paving the streets; sponsoring community events; and actively working to attract businesses and visitors to give the community an economic boost. In 1951, the Chamber turned its focus to business, tourism and community-oriented issues and programs. More than 50 years later, the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce has matured into a world-class organization with 2,400 member businesses and a thriving Scottsdale Partnership organization which coordinates the community’s fast paced economic development agenda.
