KMKC Retained by Port Authority of Greater Cincinnati

For Immediate Release

KMKC to Provide Government Affairs and Strategic Advice to Port Authority

Cincinnati, April 16, 2001- KMK Consulting Company is proud to announce that it has been retained by the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority to provide government affairs and strategic advice with respect to $588 Million in riverfront development known as The Banks and the redevelopment of brownfields throughout the City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.

This is truly an exciting time for Cincinnati, with over $3 Billion in proposed development projects including: a completed Paul Brown Stadium, the Great American Ballpark, the completed Newport Aquarium, The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, an expansion of the Convention Center, increased downtown housing and retail, and a light-rail system.

The Port Authority is concentrating on its two principal missions: the development of The Banks on the riverfront and the redevelopment of brownfields. The Banks is arguably the most important development project in Southwest Ohio. The Port Authority and the Riverfront Advisors came to the realization a few years ago that the central Cincinnati riverfront needed an identity much like what other cities had done: Cleveland has The Flats, Baltimore has The Inner Harbor, New York has Union Square, Denver has LoDo, and San Francisco has Fisherman’s Wharf. Cincinnati will now have The Banks.

The Port’s other mission is the remediation of areas contaminated with hazardous materials and/or petroleum, also known as brownfields. The passing of Issue 1 last November and Governor Taft’s Urban Revitalization Task Force were critical to the Port’s brownfield redevelopment and greenspace initiatives. These groups will focus their energies on using state funds from the $400 Million Clean Ohio Fund, along with a local match, to clean up the contaminated properties and to restore or maintain Southwest Ohio’s natural areas, green space, and waterways.

Chip Gerhardt, the head of KMK Consulting’s Government Affairs Solution Group, said "We are honored to be associated with the Port and its economic development efforts in the urban core of Cincinnati, as well as its focus on brownfield revitalization throughout Hamilton County. We have an historic opportunity to leverage the efforts of public and private partnerships to develop the area and better the community."

About the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority

The Port Authority was originally formed in 1996 as a new governmental agency by a collaborative effort between the City of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, the Mill Creek Restoration Project and the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing Sciences. The independent economic development authority was created to exclusively target brownfields. Then in 2000, the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority was created to also include the $2.1 Billion development of the City’s riverfront. The new Port’s eighteen-member board has two missions: the development of The Banks and brownfield revitalization.
